YUKA TSURUNO GALLERY is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Candida Höfer from March 7 to May 10, 2014. In this exhibition, 7 large works will be showed including library, theater, and palace. This will be the first solo show in Japan for her. From 1973 to 1982 Candida Höfer had studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf first studying Film with Ole John, before she joined Bernd Becher's first Photography class at that academy. Also at Düsseldorf, in 1975, she had her first solo exhibition at Konrad Fischer Gallery Her early work addresses the visual changes in German society brought about by migrant workers from Turkey. This subject raised her interest in the impact of the built environment on people. She turned to public and semi-public spaces ranging from railway stations, spas, to libraries, from museums to zoological gardens, from banks to opera houses, some of them well-known spectacular cultural icons, others everyday architecture that we may pass without noticing. She also realized that somewhat paradoxically such impacts are most intensely present when people are not in the image. Her photographs investigate the forms and structures of spaces, as well as intriguing details. She examines the contradictions between intention and actual use as well as the layers of historical change. This approach leads her to very personal portraits of spaces. The images invite us to take time to discover and reflect upon what spaces do to us and what we do to spaces. In her recent more abstract work Candida Höfer is focusing on the importance of details and their role in the aesthetic perception of space. For the presentation of her work she not only uses the traditional photograph in various sizes adjusted to the demands of composition, but she also shows her work in projections recalling her early involvement in film and her appreciation of image sequences, an approach she also takes in her book publications which she sees as sequential exhibition spaces. Candida Höfer's work is shown in museums like the Kunsthalle Basel, the Kunsthalle Berne, the Portikus, Frankfurt am Main, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Power Plant, Toronto, the Kunsthaus Bregenz and the Museum Ludwig, Cologne. In 2013 the artist had a solo show at the Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf.. In 2002 Candida Höfer participated in documenta 11. In 2003 she represented Germany at the Biennale in Venice (together with the late Martin Kippenberger). The artist lives in Cologne. Works in Exhibition Installation View ユカ・ツルノギャラリーでは2014年3月7日から5月10日まで、カンディダ・ヘーファーの個展を開催いたします。日本での初個展となる本展では、図書館、劇場、宮殿の写真など代表的なモチーフの大型作品7点を展示いたします。 カンディダ・ヘーファーは1944年生まれ、ケルン（ドイツ）在住。ドイツの現代写真を代表するアーティストであり、アンドレアス・グルスキー、トーマス・シュトゥルート、トーマス・ルフらとともに、ベッヒャー派の一人として世界的に知られている写真家です。1973年から 82年までデュッセルドルフ美術アカデミーに在籍し、映画を学んだ後、べッヒャー夫妻に師事。図書館や宮殿など豪奢な建築の室内空間を正面から撮影した作品で世界的に注目を浴び、2003年にはベネチア・ビエンナーレのドイツ館代表に選ばれています。 カンディタ・ヘーファーはこれまでに、クンストハレ・バーゼル、クンストハレ・ベルン、フランクフルト現代美術館、ニューヨーク近代美術館、パワープラント（トロント）、クンストハレ・ブレゲンツ、ラディック美術館（ケルン）など多数の美術館で展示をしてきました。2002年にドクメンタ11に参加し、2003年には マルティン・キッペンベルガーと共にベニス・ビエンナーレのドイツ館代表として選ばれました。2013年には、クンストパラスト美術館（デュッセルドルフ）にて個展を開催しています。また、作品はポンピドゥーセンター（フランス）、グッゲンハイム、ニューヨーク近代美術館（ニューヨーク）、バーゼル美術館など世界各地の美術館に収蔵されています。
