YUKA TSURUNO is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition "Infinite Set 2" by Tomomi Nitta from December 22.

Tomomi Nitta aspired to be a painter after completing her LLB at Kyoto University. She first studied at the Corcoran School of Art in the US to acquire oil painting techniques before transferring to Tama Art University. Her first solo exhibition “Infinite Set 1”, was held at YUKA TSURUNO immediately after her graduation in 2010. This exhibition, featuring painted figures of anonymous women using a unique media of combined crystal powder with oil paints on canvas, fascinated viewers with her excellent technique and power of expression.
 
The “Infinite Set”, which is also the title of this exhibition, is a series of works that Nitta has been continuously working on. This series uses female forms floating in a space of nothingness to express a world which ascends beyond the physicality of life activities that are supported by the continual repetition of life and death of a large number of cells. It conveys an infinite world of rich emotion and imagination, and an obscure identity that is unsure of its existence.
 
In this exhibition, Nitta will show over a dozen new works in various sizes. She states, “I want to express existence as an unstable cluster drawn from an infinite set, and as something that goes beyond the boundaries of being a cluster. At the same time, I also wish to show the occurrence of existence as something obscure and uncertain—like our perceptions and memories.” Her wind-swept and ephemeral figures painted with delicate brush strokes pose deep questions about existence, identity, and memory.

YUKA TSURUNOでは新田友美の2回目の個展「Infinite Set2」を12月22日(木)から開催いたします。

新田友美は京都大学法学部を卒業後、間もなくして画家の道を志し、米国のコーコラン・スクール・オブ・アートなどの美術大学で油彩技術の習得をした後、多摩美術大学に編入学しました。2010年の卒業直後にYUKA TSURUNOで開催した初個展「Infinite Set 1」では、アノニマスな女性像を水晶粉を練り混ぜた油絵の具によってキャンバスに描き、その技術力と卓越した表現力で鑑賞者を魅了しました。

展覧会名にもなっている「Infinite Set」とは新田が今もって描き続けているシリーズです。このシリーズでは膨大な数の細胞の絶え間ない生と死の繰り返しによって維持される生命活動と、そこに立ち昇る物質的営みをはるかに越えた無限に広がる豊かな感情や想像の世界、そしてそこに存在するかどうかも曖昧な認識の世界が、虚無のスペースに浮かぶ女性の身体を通して表現されています。

本展は同シリーズの新作１０数点で構成されます。新田が「無限集合としての不安定なひと纏まり／若しくは纏まりとしての境界を逸脱していくような私たちの存在、同時に私たちの認識や記憶のあり方と同じようにどこかに存在しているようで存在しない存在を表したい」と言うように、繊細に塗り重ねられた独特の筆致で表現された、風に吹かれたような姿の儚い人間像は、私たちに存在や認識、記憶について深く問いかけます。是非ご期待ください。
